Sustainable Paradise

Thanks to the creative thinking and collaborative efforts of Paul McNeil and Tom Story, we have confirmed the partnership with Dr. Herzog and his “Scoping Lab” team of graduate students to generate “Sustainable Paradise” by the time of our upcoming anniversary event.  The students will do a large part of the writing, research and related “heavy lifting” with the C3 Sustainability Committee’s review and feedback to the C3 Board.  There will also be a public outreach component that may involve discussion panels using the university as a forum (to be discussed further- particularly in light of the Breakfast Dialogues, etc.).

We discussed basing the document on research pieces such as Focus 2050, but will require additional research to determine the experts to tap and the best information available regarding specific topic areas. San Diego Foundation.  It will address up to ten issue areas from the standpoint of the three E’s (environment, economy, and equity) including, at least, the following topics:

o    renewable energy  - green building

o    water resources and wastewater in ocean

o    fire hazard and the urban interface Disaster Preparedness

o    beaches, waterfront, parks and open space, habitat preservation as natural capital

o    land use, mobility green development

o    social and environmental equity, border

o    waste management

We discussed what the purpose is of completing this document- i.e., will it be used for advocacy and action?  The group consensus is that we need to take a strong position to see the recommendations implemented. There was a concern that it is easy to allow documents like this to “gather dust”.  There has to be an action plan that is implemented.  This will require clearly identifying our audience and utilizing the media to reach out and promote our message in a hard-hitting way
