Sustainable Community Planning Education (SCOPE) Lab

The field of city planning is constantly evolving in practice, while its ideals have remained consistent.  Historically, city planning was established through the implementation of principles that sought to minimize the dire living conditions occurring as a result of the Industrial Revolution.  The need to execute planning policies that improve the quality of life for the citizens of a given community remains the criterion for city planners today.

Students in planning are confronted with the fact that the vitality of our natural environment is in an alarming state of decline.  Planning for sustainability has become a tool to formulate communities in a way that doesn’t contribute to environmental degradation.  The direct correlation between infrastructure design and development and the quality of life allows for planners to be particularly effective at this time.

The SCOPE – lab allows for students to apply what they learn in class to the established planning profession.  Those students who recognize the need for livable communities through planning policies that entail principles of sustainability are given the opportunity to do so through the SCOPE - lab.  The SCOPE – lab also allows for professional entities that seek the employment of student planners.  It also allows them to obtain it at a reasonable value, while not sacrificing the quality of work and commitment.  The overall framework of the SCOPE-lab will allow students and professionals to connect in a way that will give a positive impression to both sides of the professional level.
